Reclaiming Wholeness: A Guide to Soul Retrieval

Soul retrieval is an ancient shamanic method for restoring vitality, presence, and emotional cohesion following shock, trauma, or chronic stress. Whether understood through an animistic lens as the return of a wandering part of our life-force or through a psychological lens as the integration of dissociated self-states, soul retrievals resolve inner fragmentation and restore a grounded sense of self.

Understanding Soul-Loss in the Modern World

In classical core shamanism, our souls are as sensitive as butterfly wings, so severe physical trauma, emotional heartbreak, sudden loss, prolonged abuse, or medical emergencies can cause a portion of our spiritual essence to separate. This departure functions as a protective mechanism, preserving the core self from enduring unbearable pain in the moment of impact.

In therapeutic terms, soul-loss mirrors dissociation, psychic numbing, and structural dissociation of the personality. While leaving the body during acute distress preserves sanity, prolonged separation leaves a hollow void inside us that we can sense. Modern Westerners experiencing soul-loss often describe it like the feeling of being an outside observer in some parts, or all of, our own lives, like an irreplaceable part of stayed behind at a specific age or event. You might have heard yourself saying “I lost a part of myself that day” or “I think I just went numb after that”. That can be what soul loss feels like.

Recognising the Signs

Soul-loss manifests across intellectual, emotional, and physical dimensions. Common indicators include:

• Chronic feelings of being incomplete, hollow, or "not all here"

• Gaps in autobiographical memory surrounding childhood or difficult life periods (remember – you might not even know that these exist if they have been effectively ‘wiped’ from your memory when they left with the soul fragment

• Persistent apathy, numbness, or difficulty accessing joy, spontaneity, and creative spark

• A habitual impulse to look outside oneself for validation, often driving addictive or compulsive patterns to soothe inner emptiness

• Lingering fatigue or lowered immune resilience following an illness, bereavement, or accident

The Dual Perspective on Restoration

I never want and certainly don’t need people to believe what I believe, so I always try to present my work in the ‘metaphysical metaphors’ perspective, through two distinct frameworks:

\ • The animistic view: The shaman enters an altered state via the steady rhythm of the drum, travelling into the Lower or Upper World to track the departed essence with the help of power animals and spirit teachers. Once found, negotiated with, and freed from any old entrapments, the essence is blown back into the client's crown and heart centres .

\ • The psychological view: The journey acts as deep, guided active imagination and somatic subconscious repair. The drum rhythm alters neuroelectrical activity into theta wave dominance, bypassing the hyper-vigilant cognitive ego and allowing long-sequestered, frozen parts of the self to be safely witnessed, soothed, and welcomed home into the somatic body through an act of focused, beneficial neuroplasticity.

The Healing Journey: Step-by-Step

A soul retrieval session follows a careful, deliberate sequence:

\ 1. Foundational assessment: We will discuss your current life challenges, identifying the emotional freeze-points and identify any themes calling for resolution.

\ 2. Diagnostic journeying: I will enter a trance using my drum or rattle to track where the soul-fragment is living, what gifts or qualities it carries, and what conditions it requires to return.

\ 3. The transmission ceremony: While you are resting comfortably, the retrieved fragment is brought back and breathed into the physical vessel and energetic field.

\ 4. Integration: The days following the ceremony require steady, gentle grounding. Clients are given concrete embodiment tasks—such as mindful nature walks in local woodlands, journaling, and dedicated creative expression—to weave the returned qualities back into everyday waking habits.

\ 5. Follow up: About a week after the reintegration, we will have a follow up via video call, during which we will see how well the fragment has reintegrated with the whole and how this has affected you since the session.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can multiple soul parts return in one session?

Typically, my guides will return only those fragments that are ready to return and that your nervous system and energetic field are capable of integrating. Overwhelming the system with too many parts at once is counterproductive; steady, sequential work yields the most enduring results. Some people have reintegrated 4 or more parts, although 1 or 2 is more common and more easily integrated.

Will I have to re-live the trauma during the ceremony?

No, absolutely not. Soul retrieval focuses on the return of life-force and vitality, not re-traumatisation. I will navigate the spirit world to release the binding so that the fragment may return, allowing you to receive the reclaimed energy in safety and comfort.
